Methodology & Sources
Sources
- FDIC BankFind Suite API - institution roster, quarterly Call Report financials (latest quarter shown: June 30, 2026), and the failures list. FDIC data is a work of the U.S. government and is in the public domain.
- FDIC Summary of Deposits (SOD) - deposits booked at every bank office as of June 30, 2026 (75,859 offices). Powers branch counts, footprints, and county/state deposit market-share pages.
- NCUA Call Report quarterly files - Form 5300 data for every credit union that filed for June 30, 2026, plus NCUA branch data. NCUA data is likewise public domain.
- U.S. Census Bureau gazetteer - county names for FIPS codes in the SOD file.
Definitions
- FDIC dollar amounts are reported in thousands and converted to dollars on this site.
- Equity to assets is total equity capital divided by total assets - a simple leverage snapshot, not a regulatory capital ratio. Where the FDIC reports a Tier 1 leverage ratio, that is shown separately.
- Uninsured deposits is the FDIC's estimate of deposits above the insurance limit, as a share of total deposits.
- Noncurrent loans are loans 90+ days past due plus nonaccrual loans, as a share of total loans. Net charge-offs are loans charged off minus recoveries, annualized by the FDIC, as a share of loans.
- Credit union net worth ratio is NCUA account 998 (net worth divided by total assets), the prompt-corrective-action capital measure.
- Credit union delinquency is loans delinquent two months or more (accounts 021B+022B+023B) as a share of total loans.
- Credit union return on assets is approximate: year-to-date net income (account 392) annualized against period-end assets.
- Rankings apply minimum-size filters (shown on each page's source note) so tiny institutions do not dominate ratio rankings.
Caveats
- Branch deposits are booked at the office holding them, which is not always where the customer lives; online banks concentrate deposits at head offices.
- Five-year trends use June snapshots only (June 2022 - June 2026).
- Filings are as reported by institutions and are occasionally revised; this site reflects the files as published when the quarter's build ran.
- The failures list counts FDIC failures only, excluding assistance transactions.
The site is rebuilt from source each quarter when new Call Report data is published.
